Several common problems with slip rings

1) Slip ring short circuit

When a short circuit occurs after a slip ring has been used for a period of time, it may be that the life of the slip ring has expired, or the slip ring has been overloaded and burned out. Generally, if a short circuit appears on a new slip ring, it is caused by a problem with the insulation material inside the slip ring, a direct short circuit between the brush wires, or broken wires. This must be tested using the elimination method.

2) The signal slip ring interferes too much

Slip rings can be used to transmit power and signals, but interference will occur between power and signals. This interference is divided into internal interference and external interference. The designer must clearly know the type of signal, and special wires must be used for internal and external shielding for special signals. For the already formed slip ring, if it is found that the slip ring signal is interfered, the external wires can be shielded by oneself. If the problem still cannot be solved, the internal structure of the slip ring can only be redesigned.

3) The slip ring does not rotate smoothly:

Exclude problems with slip ring assembly and bearing selection. The reason for such problems is usually that the customer did not put forward anti-seismic requirements when selecting the slip ring, and the environment in which it is used has strong vibrations. Causes damage to the thin-walled bearing in the slip ring, cracks of the plastic spindle, etc.

4) The protection level does not match the usage environment:

Usually, the protection level of conductive slip rings without special instructions is IP54. Without additional protection, some customers place the slip ring in a location with waterproof requirements, causing water to enter the slip ring, causing an internal short circuit and causing the slip ring to fail.

5) Circuit design without protection circuit leads to:

When usually conductive slip rings leave the factory, the insulation performance of the product is tested at a high voltage of more than 5 times the working voltage. Even so, under some working conditions, it cannot meet the requirements, causing the slip ring to be broken down and short-circuited and burned.

6) The slip ring is burned due to overload:

The maximum current allowed by the slip ring is the current value that can be operated safely based on comprehensive factors such as the cross-sectional area of the conductive ring, the brush contact area, the pressure between the brush and the contact surface, and the rotation speed. Exceeding this value, the conductive slip ring may generate heat at least, or the contact surface may catch fire, or even form a welding point between the brush and the conductive ring. Although a certain safety factor will be considered in the design stage of conductive slip rings, it is recommended that customers provide the slip ring manufacturer with the actual maximum current used.
